This is not surprising, considering how society today is living a cashless existence. And because more and more people are depending on their cards, more and more businesses also need to get merchant accounts to be able to process credit card transactions.
So how exactly are merchant accounts sold?
As merchant account sales training would reveal, these accounts are not sold in the traditional sense. Retailers and business owners cannot simply get an account and buy the necessary equipment for it. Instead, they need to apply for the account. The application can be a simple process or an arduous procedure, depending on the status of the business. If the business passes the standards and the rules set by the processor (and, in turn, by the credit card associations), the processor will give the merchant the account.

Although they are strict when it comes to approving applications, it doesn’t mean that they can afford not to accept anyone. One fairly new process is the use of third party partners or individuals to promote and sell the account and the service. These individuals are asked to get the financial statements of a business and send it to the processor. The statements, of course, will be used to assess whether the company is qualified for an account. Once assessed and proven to be qualified, the company will then pursue the owner of the financial statements and convince him to get an account from them – or switch from their current service to their own. The partners who acquired the statements are given commission and a cut from the transaction fees charged to the business owner.
